Step 1: The Fabric Hunt & Pattern Placement

Every single shade starts with a conversation and a roll of beautiful fabric. Whether we are sourcing a vibrant linen, a rich heritage velvet, or working with a piece of heirloom fabric a client has brought to us, the material dictates the strategy.

Unlike mass-produced shades that are cut swiftly by machines to maximize output, hand-rolling requires a meticulous eye for pattern placement.

What we look for: If a fabric features a stunning botanical motif or a geometric print, we spend time adjusting the templates to ensure the most beautiful part of the design sits perfectly centre-stage on the curve of the shade.

Step 2: Preparing the Foundation

A great lampshade needs a flawless, durable foundation. We use specialist, fire-retardant lampshade PVC components, cutting the exact dimensions required for the frame.

The fabric is carefully bonded to this backing. This is a high-stakes moment—any trapped dust, stray thread, or air bubble will be magnified tenfold the second a light bulb clicks on. We use specialized tucking tools and steady pressure to ensure a completely smooth, permanent bond.

Step 3: The Art of the Roll

Next comes the engineering phase: marrying the flat fabric panel to the steel wire rings that form the top and bottom of the shade.

This requires a unique blend of strength and delicacy. We apply high-tack adhesive tape to the painted steel rings, then slowly, systematically roll the fabric panel around the frames. The seams must meet with absolute, millimeter precision. A sloppy seam ruins the clean silhouette of a lamp, so we take our time ensuring the overlap is as invisible as humanly possible.

Step 4: Tuck, Fold, and Finish

The hallmark of a truly luxury lampshade is how it looks from the inside and along the edges. Mass-manufactured shades often leave raw, frayed fabric or plastic edges exposed on the inside rim.

We use a traditional "tuck and roll" method. The fabric margin left on the edges is painstakingly snipped around the wire struts and tucked cleanly under the ring using a specialized tool. The result? A pristine, clean edge where the fabric looks like it naturally wraps itself around the frame. For our pleated or traditional stitched shades, this is where we sew bespoke linings or add custom trims and fringes by hand.
